SUMMER OF FLAT TRAVEL NUMBERS ENDS IN DECLINE
Colorado travel decreases as National numbers reach highest Labor Day volume since 2008
Denver, August 21 – AAA Colorado is projecting that 563,000 Coloradans will journey 50 miles or more from home during the Labor Day weekend, a decrease of 1.7 percent from last year. Summer holiday weekend travel has been flat during 2014 with the number of travelers for both Memorial Day and Independence Day at comparable numbers to 2013. Nationally, AAA projects 34.7 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home during the Labor Day holiday weekend, the highest volume for the holiday since 2008 and a 1.3 percent increase over 2013. The Labor Day holiday travel period is defined as Thursday, August 28 to Monday, September 1.
An end-of-summer road trip will be popular – 83 percent of Colorado travelers will do so by car. With the majority of the country experiencing lower than average prices, motorists in Western states are paying premiums at the pump versus this time last year as tighter supplies struggle to meet local demand. The largest year-over-year increases in the price per gallon are recorded in the western states of Nevada (+14 cents), Colorado (+13 cents) and Oregon (+12 cents). The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Colorado is currently $3.67.
Ten percent of Colorado travelers will be going by air, encountering airfares just two percent higher than last year according to the AAA Leisure Travel Index. The average round-tip, discounted fare for the top 40 U.S. routes currently costs $219. Daily car rental costs remain consistent with 2013 at $51. Rates at AAA Three Diamond rated hotels have increased six percent over last year with travelers spending an average of $171 per night.
