EV Range Anxiety? Introducing Roadside Charging
In celebration of Earth Day 2015, AAA Colorado unveiled a truck that can quick charge electric vehicles on the roadside. The launch of the electric vehicle (EV) charging truck means AAA Colorado can now rescue members with depleted electric vehicles and provide a sufficient charge to reach a charging station.
The number one reason consumers cite for not purchasing an electric vehicle is fear that the vehicle will have insufficient electrical charge to reach the destination. AAA Colorado’s roadside quick charge capability could ease the ‘range anxiety’ experienced by EV owners and this on-the-go solution could save EV owners the inconvenience and potential cost of a tow.
“Denver has been ranked among the top friendliest metropolitan areas for drivers of electric vehicles. AAA Colorado is pleased to add to that reputation by making this roadside service available to its members. AAA has long been a leader in addressing the needs of motorists, providing jump starts, tows, new batteries, fuel and locksmith services to our members in need. With the introduction of mobile electric vehicle charging, AAA is continuing that tradition,” says Tony DeNovellis, President and CEO of AAA Colorado.
The electric vehicle charging truck can charge all current EVs at Level II (240 volts @ 30 amps) as well as provide an 80 amps charge – the first mobile unit in the nation capable of doing so. AAA will provide members with discharged electric vehicles a quick charge in as little as 15 minutes, which will allow the vehicle to be driven up to 10 miles (depending on the vehicle).
AAA Colorado has recently added a Level II electric charging station at the Denver retail store located at 4100 E. Arkansas Ave. The charging station will be available to AAA members and the public at no cost, while doing business with AAA. Plans are to install charging stations at additional AAA Colorado retail stores as member interest in the program increases.
The EV charging service is included in all AAA Colorado Memberships and can be requested at 800-AAA-HELP (800-222-4357).
